For the last few years there has been what has seemed like a neverending game of chinese whispers concerning potential redevelopment of the Tesco supermarket and the adjoining Ellesmere Centre.
This week Tesco submitted their planning application to demolish the existing store and rebuild from the ground up. You can view the details here although some of the documents have not yet been uploaded.
I am very interested to hear what local residents across Walkden, Little Hulton and the wider Worsley area think about these new proposals – please leave a comment or e-mail me at councillor.lindley@salford.gov.uk if you’d like to let me know what you think.

Where are Tescos going to trade whilst the work is going on?
I will find out for you Joan.
have Tesco taken into account the structural damage the lorries will cause to residential properties. let alone the noise.
Janet – you need to make those points to the Council’s planning department. If you click on the link above you should be able to find a form for resident comments on the application.
Why have the units in the centre been allowed to remain empty, do Tesco plan to take these as well for parking etc.
Why were steps built onto the empty shell of the building that once was the Market Hall?
I think its a stupid idea and that tesco should just keep the store they have. As one person has already said what are they going to do about the shops in the ellsmere centre are they going to destroy these as well.
Tesco are putting the little shops out of business as it is. So what about those shops where is their trade going to come from when they decide to take down tesco as all the space will be taken up with trucks and things.
Why hasn’t the Car Park on Bolton Road opened up?
It was completed last November.
Since the new car park on Bolton Road is going to become part of the new Tesco Extra’s retal space/underground parking will the 65 parking spaces at the new lift health center be adequate given the number of employees and visitors expected and if not what do the council propose
First of all, finally something may actaully get done.
I dont see the need in complainined about the emopty shops.
What i heard was a new tescos was gonan eb built as well as the ellesmere centre updated. I think the council should sent letters to resident up to a mile or so of the radius of where the building will take place. I think it will eventually be a good idea. everyone complains now…but i bet they’ll be shopping there when its done! x
what about the other store….JD and JJB are they taking over them as well?
I think its fantastic news. Walkden is desperately in need of this kind of investment. The current tesco store is looking shabby, the entrance to the car park from Manchester road is a disgrace (what would it have cost to tarmac that 50mtr stretch???), the empty units of the Ellesmere just add to the towns poor appearance and the Bolton Road side looks like a slum (dont know if their plans extend that far). For me, any investment of this size has got to be welcomed regardless of the inconvenience during the works. Do people really want to continue shopping in such a scruffy, down trodden, poor looking area?
WE HAVE JUST OPENED A SHOP THEN WE HEAR THAT TESCO ARE TO RE BUILD WHAT A JOKE ICAN NOT SEE WAY A BIG COMPANY LIKE THAT GET ALL THERE OWN WAY SPECK TO THE PEOPLE AND SEE WHAT THEY WONT A VOTE THAT IS WHAT IT NEEDS BUT THERE AGAIN COIN HAS THE LAST WORD
What is going to happen to the clock it is unique striking thirteen times at one o’clock, The old lady Berk clock went missing off the old National coal broad building, It would be a shame to loose this one to
Are these queries going to be answered?
What are you lot on about. you need to stop moaning about tesco is the best thing the town has to offer its the only reason people come and spend there money here. Its not putting the smaller companies out of business its keeping them in it. tesco attracts shopers from miles around to walkden. Tesco is not to blame for the state the centre is knocking down pembroke halls is where the problems started. when we had a market things were nice many more shops were occupied and business was good. now we’ve replaced with that monstrosity the town centre has just gone downhill. you shouldn’t keep blasting tesco at every oppurtunity you get or they may leave and then you would see a really drop in the town centres credibility
I can count many queries from home owners and shop owners there that have not been answered by the comittee, Can you at least put your pencils & bank statements down for one minute and just take some time to reasure us residents that have lived and worked here for years!
is there not a mopopoly rule for this being the epicentere of commerce within a socially deprived area? i mean in competion rule its hardly fair…what is it now one in four of our pounds go to tesco?
I can’t say that I am a great lover of Tesco, but used them when I lived in Walkden. I’m glad to say that I don’t have to rely on them to any great extent these days.
However, the current store is a carbuncle on the horizon of Walkden – it was when it was the original Scan Store (and that’s going back a bit). If Tesco can built a modern store (Chorley is nice) as is Southport, then good for them. Whatever they build it must improve the appearance of the Walkden Shopping area.
PS when is the car park entrance going to be improved from the A6?
was the question of where tesco will trade or if at all ??? answered yet??? im actually sort of desperate to no..
i think that it is a fantastic idea as at the moment walkden is run down and needs regeneration. The new tesco will provide this. Also tesco will provide more jobs in this tough economic times. Ade what are you going on about? Tesco is not being sarcastic prejudice you are just talking rubbish. Anyway the tesco store at the moment is run down and i think that the new tesco is good for walkden
i am makin a complaint you might think u r doin somthing good but i dont recon you are shutting shops just because you are bein sill so jjb has bein shut so if they dont get put back then somthing will happen to tesco ;( i am discusted with you ……………. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Hi chelsea, I was told by one of the people that works in tesco cafe that it is closing whilst the do it. I think it won’t be long either as they seem to be running low on things and alot of the things in the freezer are £1. As for shops closing I would think they have been offered the chance to move into one of the MANY empty ones! Some seem to have taken it… some have closed. But I would imagine the new tesco although it will be a pain in the process will be fantastic and will attract more people and other shops and also make more jobs for local people…? ALSO JJB are a wealthy enough business and had they wanted to stay they could quite easily have got another one inside.
to add to the clock comment…
I also think it would be nice to incorporate it into the new builds.
The reason it rings 13 times is because it is a replica of an old clock used back when walkded was a coal mining town.
It chimed to mark the start and end of shifts but workers said they couldn’t hear the single chime so they chimed it 13 times.
Would be nice to keep links to local history!!!
Tesco have put in a planning application for various things like extra storage in containers, refridgeration equipment and a large fence round the back of the former Kwik Save unit. I believe from the planning application that Tesco intend to use this unit and one or two units either side to trade from on a temporary basis while the store is rebuilt. I would guess by the activity on site that the work will progress sooner rather than later.
Just reading everyones comments, I too have been told that Tesco will temporarily trade from the old kwik save site from 11 May – not sure how true it is though. I would like to ask a question of the council and this relates to the demolition that has taken place including but not limited to the old furniture store. The amount of dust that was created by this demolition was ridiculous and I would like conifirmation that the site had been tested for asbestos. This may seem petty but Asbestosis can lie undetected for years within individuals and hundreds of people were breathing in the dust one Saturday morning.
In terms of Tesco’s new build I agree that the new site will look a lot better and benefit us shoppers with it’s niceness but in terms of pricing of products there is no competition in Walkden, we could do with an Asda, Morrisons or Sainsburys to drive the prices down.
This is progress, The year is 2009, not 1973, when the Rubbets opened scan with Sugar Baby Love,They might get, Simom,Amanda and Piers, To give it three Yeses,Britains Got Tesco.
Friday May the 8th iiam I went to Tesco’s and was annoyed to find quite a few shelves empty including the skimmed milk section. Where to they think pensioners can get their groceries? Couldn’t they have waited till Saturday night before clearing their shelves?

I’m glad Tesco are doing something about the ellesmere centre, it’s a blot on the landscape. All you complainers should be glad Tesco is there, where else would you go? If they left there would be another 400 people on the dole.
Most of the shelves were empty on Thursday,7th May, I ended up having to go to Tesco Irlam on Saturday to get the rest of my groceries!! Derek – I seem to remember it was Hughie Green who opened Scan back in 1973 not the Roubettes??
In reply to Em regarding asbestos.
The Law requires that Tesco should have long-since inspected the premises for asbestos and – if it was found – either remove it, or mark it and make it safe whilst the place was in use. As you are obviously (and quite rightly) concerned, then you could write to Tesco and ask them whether or not asbestos is still present in the building.
If asbestos IS still present, then it’s safe disposal MUST be addressed somewhere in the Redevelopment Project Health & Safety plan. So you could ask for a copy of the relevant bit of that plan.
Of course if they try to fob you off by saying they don’t know, I’m sure the Health & Safety Inspectorate would be VERY interested!
I wont be going to Tesco’s at Walkden anymore as walking from Bolton Road is all uphill and when you’ve shopped you have to go uphill again to get a taxi. I’ll get the 550 to Farnworth with my friend then we’ll share a taxi home. Just hope that I will be alive to shop at the Biggest Tesco ever.
i think this is great for walkden.
25 years ago before there were large supermarkets everywhere, tesco put walkdenon the map. tesco and walkden were seen hand in hand by people of the surrounding towns. i remember people traveling from miles around to shop at tesco and this brought a lot of trade and money into walkden from the surrounding area. other local bussinesses as well as tesco benefitted.
those days are gone because there are now large asda’s, morrisons, sainsburys etc all over the place.
Building this new superstore will take walkden back to those days when people travelled from miles around to spend their money in walkden. This has to be a good thing for all local shops and businesses. Far from taking trade away from small businesses this should bring more shoppers into the area as well as providing many jobs for local people.
this is progress and good for walkden.
Except it wasn’t Tesco was it? It was ‘Scan’!
Does anyone know when the new Tesco will be ready and open? I have 2 children (1 about to start college and 1 about to start uni), who are desperate to get jobs but unfortunately theres nothing out there for them. I thought that they could get their applications forms in early!!
I LIVE IN KEARSLEY NEAR BOLTON. WHAT I CANT UNDERSTAND IS WHY THE OWNERS OF THE ELSMERE CENTRE REMOVED THE MARKET HALL. I HAVE VISITED THE CENTRE QUITE A FEW TIMES AND AM SORRY TO SEE IT HALF EMPTY. WHY HAVE THEY LET IT GO DOWN HILL. I REMEMBER IT DURING THE BUILDING OF IT. AS REGARDS TESCO, THEY ARE TO BUILD ANOTHER LARGE STORE AT THE END OF LONGCAUSEWAY JUST DOWN THE RD FROM THE ONE BEING DEVELOPED IN WALKDEN.
TESCO ARE SLOWLEYTAKING OVER .
WHY DONT THEY KNOCK THE WHOLE ELSMERE CENTRE DOWN AND ALL OF THE SHOPS. THEY MIGHT AS WELL . BECOUSE TESCO WILL PUT THEM OUT OF BUISUNES ANYWAY. THATS WHY BOLTON RD LOOKS SO BAD.
We think it’s great news keep up the good work Tesco
x
well you ppl make me sick something good happens to this great town and all you can do is moan like school kids in the playground GET A LIFE. P.S Ladbrooks bookies ROCKS Woo WOo WOO
Well Bernie—it’s clear that you’re young and probably a car owner.
When you’re elderly without the luxury of a car–the trek from Manchester Road to Tesco’s is hardgoing and walking back with groceries for a bus is worse. People will be coming far and near to shop at the Giant Tesco’s and wont bother looking around the smaller shops, (so many have already closed down)
There’s so many items you can’t get from the Ellesmere Centre such as small sliced loaves, vegetables, fresh meat so we have to go to Farnworth’s Asda. The traffic will be terrible on Bolton Road–some turning left into the underground car park and some going to Gateway
The newsagents in the Ellesmere has closed down now.
The Freezer shop last month. Boots will be moving soon.
Thank goodness we still have “Piggy in the Middle”
I agree with Andrew —pull it all down–it’s like a building site with dust everywhere and restricted walking area’s
How the pensioner’s are coping WALKING to Tesco’s and carrying their shopping back to get their busses I don’t know.
The giant Tesco’s was supposed to be finished by June, now it’s September, my guess will be the first week in December–they can’t miss out on the Christmas trade –can they?
