Tesco Walkden - Planning Application Submitted

For the last few years there has been what has seemed like a neverending game of chinese whispers concerning potential redevelopment of the Tesco supermarket and the adjoining Ellesmere Centre.

This week Tesco submitted their planning application to demolish the existing store and rebuild from the ground up. You can view the details here although some of the documents have not yet been uploaded.

I am very interested to hear what local residents across Walkden, Little Hulton and the wider Worsley area think about these new proposals - please leave a comment or e-mail me at councillor.lindley@salford.gov.uk if you’d like to let me know what you think.

Where are Tescos going to trade whilst the work is going on?

have Tesco taken into account the structural damage the lorries will cause to residential properties. let alone the noise.

Janet - you need to make those points to the Council’s planning department. If you click on the link above you should be able to find a form for resident comments on the application.

Why have the units in the centre been allowed to remain empty, do Tesco plan to take these as well for parking etc.

Why were steps built onto the empty shell of the building that once was the Market Hall?

I think its a stupid idea and that tesco should just keep the store they have. As one person has already said what are they going to do about the shops in the ellsmere centre are they going to destroy these as well.

Tesco are putting the little shops out of business as it is. So what about those shops where is their trade going to come from when they decide to take down tesco as all the space will be taken up with trucks and things.

Why hasn’t the Car Park on Bolton Road opened up?
    It was completed last November.

Since the new car park on Bolton Road is going to become part of the new Tesco Extra’s retal space/underground parking will the 65 parking spaces at the new lift health center be adequate given the number of employees and visitors expected and if not what do the council propose

First of all, finally something may actaully get done.
I dont see the need in complainined about the emopty shops.
What i heard was a new tescos was gonan eb built as well as the ellesmere centre updated. I think the council should sent letters to resident up to a mile or so of the radius of where the building will take place. I think it will eventually be a good idea. everyone complains now…but i bet they’ll be shopping there when its done! x

I think its fantastic news. Walkden is desperately in need of this kind of investment. The current tesco store is looking shabby, the entrance to the car park from Manchester road is a disgrace (what would it have cost to tarmac that 50mtr stretch???), the empty units of the Ellesmere just add to the towns poor appearance and the Bolton Road side looks like a slum (dont know if their plans extend that far). For me, any investment of this size has got to be welcomed regardless of the inconvenience during the works. Do people really want to continue shopping in such a scruffy, down trodden, poor looking area?
