I don't recall the Conservative leaflet that you refer to, Chris - it certainly didn't go out here in Worsley - but I wasn't debating the rights and wrongs of using serving police officers in political literature. I was pointing out the hypocrisy of the Salford Labour leadership in doing something that they were themselves critical of others for doing.

Just come across this and rather amused to see the comments from Lib Dems. Their Manchester colleagues featured supposedly supportive quotes from the late great Chief Mike Todd on their ridiculous knife crime nonsense. He was furious. Particularly as they pushed it through his own door. Unusually the police issued an angry rebuttal to a story in one of the N Manchester freesheets on the same lame stats lies.

Similarly Marc Rambo got carpeted at Bootle Street for giving the press some bilge about the police and Canal Street enforcement re outdoor drinking.

And of course, let's not forget, Tory leaflets for the last General Election, possibly GMC-wide I think, and possibly during the immediate election period, featured serving Police Officer Sgt Oliver Clarke pictured with a bunch of PPCs visiting Chester House. He was in uniform as I recall though last I heard he does or did a computer support role and does not work in uniform.

Talk about pot and kettle. Probably best avoided as John Merry clearly agrees. But he's no Joe Stalin. Pretty relaxed actually. And AFAICS Tories and Lib Dems on their high horses have done far worse when it comes to breaking the protocols on police and officers in photo opportunities.

Unfortunately this has happened in Tameside with council staff and mainly Tameside Patrollers (crap town wardens) taking a nice photoshoot with Labour councillors and candidates.

I have a blog post related to this going up soon.

That's a howler John! You're saying it's okay because it was timed just before the electioneering period! The above leaflet is a flagrant, shameless piece of Labour propaganda which clearly exploits the police for political advantage.

So let me get this straight - it's alright to use local police officers in political propaganda, as long as you do it just before the notice of election!

(March I believe, incidentally)
