New Recycling Bins – Now Delayed By 1 Year

As many local residents will be aware, the roll-out of the new recycling bins was due to be completed across the whole of the City of Salford earlier this year. Unfortunately this has not happened, and only about half of the City has received the new bins.

This is very frustrating given the amount of publicity given to the new arrangements, and I worry that the delay will cause a loss of goodwill towards the scheme when it finally does get up and running. It’s also -for once – out of the Council’s control, and many local authorities across the country are in exactly the same boat.

There is a nationwide – indeed I believe Europe-wide – shortage of wheelie bins. It would be interesting to see the terms of the contract with the supplier – one would hope that the Council will be able to claim for significant compensation given the inability of the supplier to fulfil the terms of the agreement.

In the meantime it seems that local residents in Walkden and Little Hulton will now not see the new bins until March 2009 – a full year behind schedule. A real disappointment.

Maybe they could now change the Order to include some smaller bins. The last thing we want outside the house is a a full set of the full-size bins.

I agree they are a bit big. They could also encourage neighbours to share bins.

But then YOU get fined if they overfill it, or put the ‘wrong’ thing in? Or are those stories just made-up by the Daily Express?
