No, I Won’t Be Lapdancing At Conference

There’s been a bit of a fuss over the innocuous-looking brochure (pictured right – that’s my copy) sent out by Marketing Birmingham to Conservative Party Conference delegates as part of our Conference pack. Amongst a myriad of money-off vouchers is an offer for £10-off entry to the Rocket Gentleman’s Club.
Now I have no intention of visiting the Rocket Club or any other lapdancing bar while I’m in Birmingham (or anywhere else, for that matter) and it would probably have been better for all concerned if this particular voucher had not found it’s way into the booklet, but I do find the self-righteous and hyper-critical response of some Labour Party members to be both hugely over-the-top and soaked in hypocrisy.
The comments of Steve McCabe MP in the Mirror, for example, are entirely and deliberately ignorant of the fact that this isn’t actually Conservative Party literature at all. It’s entirely the work of Marketing Birmingham, and the Rocket Club offer is nestled amongst vouchers for some really controversial parts of the City, such as the restaurant at the Rep Theatre. Scandalous!
He is also rather tempting fate -  I’m sure that no Labour delegates at all will frequent lapdancing bars when they’re in Manchester this week for Conference. Oh no. Absolutely not. None at all, guv!
