Almost All Over

Well, it’s 3.15am and barring a spectacular collapse that even Devon Loch couldn’t conceive it looks like Barack Obama will become the next President of the United States of America. It’s been interesting to watch all the events unfold and I think I’m going to stay up until Obama hits the magic 270. Not sure I’ve got the energy left to keep blogging – it’s been a long day all round – so I shall bid any readers who have made it up this late farewell for the night and I’ll update at some point after the sun comes up!

A new dawn of American leadership has arrived. I can only hope that the great optimism and hope and empowerment in the electorate that the election in America has spawned can be continued and will spread to all shores.
If anything the election has shown is that when representatives are something which the electorate can relate to and be shown that they are listened to then they will re-engage in the system.
It saddens me that when I look at Salford Council I do not see true representation. Not in terms of red, yellow or blue but in demographics. Hopefully this new dawn in leadership will extend across the pond.

    Congratulations to President Elect Obama

I congratulate Barack Obama on his historic victory but I’m afraid I do not share the mood of hysterical optimism and Obama-swooning. I don’t believe in political messiahs. At best human government can rule wisely and morally but I’m under no illusions that any person or any political system can end war or poverty or inequality or bring about utopia on earth. I’ve shared a couple of my concerns about Obama on my blog. I’m sorry Hazel doesn’t approve of blogging… I think that might be because it’s a rather effective form of opposition! I recall that in the Scrutiny Committee meeting three days ago in regard of the ‘call-in’ over the Life in Salford magazine, John Merry referred during the meeting to the blog of a certain Iain Lindley… it seems to me that blogging is only unpopular with Salford Labour! Keep it up Iain (the blogging that is)!
