Labour Vote To Close St George’s – A Truly Appalling Decision

This morning the Labour Cabinet of Salford City Council made a truly appalling decision, and voted to close St George’s RC High School in Walkden.

St George’s is an excellent school and achieves results both academically and pastorally. It continues to be oversubscribed despite the threat hanging over the school, and unlike many secondary schools in Salford it runs a balanced budget. Most tellingly, it has the overwhelming support of pupils, parents, staff and the local community. There is no reasonable case for closing it down, and yet Labour have voted to do just that.

The school’s Governing Body now have the opportunity to appeal against the decision to the independent adjudicator. I hope that they do so, and that they are successful.

Failing that, local residents know that by ejecting their pliant Labour Councillors in favour of hard-working Conservatives in the 2010 local elections, they can have a Council that listens to the people, revokes the closure notice and keeps St George’s RC High School open.
