On Merit

Over at the MEN, David Ottewell has penned a very impressive dismissal of Harriet Harman’s daft comments over the weekend, prompting me to have another quick gander at the political gender balance here in Salford.

Of the 13 Conservative Councillors in Salford, 7 are women (54%) including our Leader, Deputy Leader and Chief Whip. Even more importantly, they are all there on merit – they have been selected as candidates and as leaders because they are the best people for the job.

Contrast that with the Labour Party who despite their 36 Councillors can only muster up 8 women (22%). At a Cabinet level the balance is even worse, with only 1 female Cabinet member out of a 10-strong team (and the most junior Cabinet member at that).

Perhaps Ms Harman ought to pop along to the next meeting of the Salford Labour Group? Wouldn’t that be fun?
