Community Day on Blackleach Drive

I was grateful for the invitation from Irwell Valley housing association to pop along to their Community Day on Blackleach Drive and Bulrush Close in north Walkden this afternoon.

Unfortunately the weather was not kind to the event, but it was great to see the housing association officers working with the Police and Fire Service to engage with local residents.

I had a very useful chat with the local representatives from Irwell Valley about the work that they have done in the Blackleach/Bulrush area and also some of the measures they have taken to support residents in their flats on Holyoake Road in my ward who have suffered from anti-social behaviour.

Hazel Trousers £20k

So it transpires that Hazel Blears trousered a handy £20k in severance pay following her resignation as a Minister. Given she resigned voluntarily, I am baffled as to why she is entitled to anything at all – and appalled that she thought it was okay to accept the money after all that.

Leaving office is a known hazard of being involved in politics. If a Councillor loses their seat, the allowance stops the next day. I don’t see why it should be any different for Ministers.
