Communications Allowance To Be Scrapped?

Our Labour Government has a dreadful record when it comes to undermining democracy, and the £10000 per annum “Communications Allowance” for MPs is one of the most glaring examples of that.

The Communications Allowance is an appalling rule which allows each MP to spend £10000 of taxpayers’ money each year on newsletters and leaflets promoting themselves. It is a propaganda fund introduced by this Labour Government with the sole aim of ensuring that Labour MPs have a better chance of saving their seats – and doing it with your money.

David Cameron has already pledged that a Conservative Government would abolish the Communications Allowance and on a personal level, I’ve pledged that if elected as the next MP for Worsley & Eccles South I would make no use of the allowance. There is no justification for such misuse of taxpayers’ hard-earned cash.

I’m really pleased to hear, then, that the Kelly report is likely to recommend that the Communications Allowance be abolished. Good news. One can only hope that Labour MPs do not take the opportunity to rush out with a new taxpayer-funded newsletter before the allowance is scrapped for good. Local residents would, I’m sure, take a very dim view of such propaganda on the rates.

Greetings From Woking

One of the joys of being a Parliamentary Candidate is the inordinate amount of unsolicited mail from lobbyists and companies writing the same e-mails to every single candidate from every single party. Nevertheless they sometimes provide an amusing break from the monotony. Today’s spam e-mail begins…

Dear Iain Lindley,

We at [company name] would like to offer our congratulations to you on your campaign in Woking so far.

Hazel Blears’ Advertiser Column

I haven’t yet received this week’s Advertiser, but a resident rang me up yesterday to complain that Hazel Blears has been given a monthly column. I will refrain from commenting on the column itself until I’ve actually read it, but on the principle of her submitting a piece every month, I would like to comment briefly.

Hazel Blears has been MP for Salford now for over 12 years. She, and the Labour Party, have taken Salford residents for granted for all of that time.

After 12 years of silence and complacency, local residents will rightly question Hazel’s motives for suddenly showing an interest in writing a column now, just 6 months before a competitive General Election.

Friends of Roe Green Quiz

Well, I made it home for Question Time, but before that I’ve had a lovely evening at the Friends of Roe Green quiz night, which was really well attended by local residents. Unfortunately “team Tory” (myself and the three ward Councillors Karen Garrido, Graham Compton and Ian MacDonald) weren’t quite able to pick up the crown and win, but it was a really enjoyable evening nonetheless!

You can find out more about the Friends of Roe Green by visiting their website.

The North-South Divide: Life Expectancy

David Ottewell has an extremely interesting post on our life-expectancy rates and the difference between the north and the south. He has produced a useful bar chart showing (on one hand) Salford and Manchester and (on the other) Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster who are at the top of the chart. I hope he won’t object to me reprinting his handiwork here:

One can’t help but noticing that the lines begin to diverge much more sharply after 1997…

Working Hard In Your Area

I’ve been working for a while on a Google map so that local residents can see what I’ve been up to in their area. It’s far from the finished article but I think there’s enough on there to go live now…

Where Should Our New Play Facilities Go?

The Council has secured funding to create or improve 11 new play spaces for children aged 8-13 across the City of Salford, and they are asking local people about the sort of facilities that they’d like, and where they’d like to put them.

You can respond to the consultation on the Council website - if you’d like further information, contact contact Barry Glasspell, Salford’s Play and Out of School Activities Co-ordinator on 0161 778 0313.

There are a number of events across the City during the consultation – visit the website link above to find out when they are coming to your area!
