Reports today suggest that, after much characteristic dithering, the Prime Minister has agreed to take part in a TV debate in the run-up to the next General Election. This is welcome news although I still don’t understand why he has dithered for weeks before suggesting that he would take up the offer.

However reading Prime Minister’s comments today, they are riddled with weasel-words that would allow him to back out nearer the time if he is unhappy with the format. Contrast that with David Cameron who accepted immediately and pretty much unconditionally.

A TV debate (or series thereof) would be great for our democracy and it is a shame that Gordon Brown cannot just say “yes” without dithering first and then hanging on a long series of conditions.
