Hazel Blears’ Advertiser Column

I haven’t yet received this week’s Advertiser, but a resident rang me up yesterday to complain that Hazel Blears has been given a monthly column. I will refrain from commenting on the column itself until I’ve actually read it, but on the principle of her submitting a piece every month, I would like to comment briefly.

Hazel Blears has been MP for Salford now for over 12 years. She, and the Labour Party, have taken Salford residents for granted for all of that time.

After 12 years of silence and complacency, local residents will rightly question Hazel’s motives for suddenly showing an interest in writing a column now, just 6 months before a competitive General Election.

  • Speaking of Advertising…

I see City West have taken a large billboard in central Walkden (and, no doubt, elsewhere too) to proclaim the merits of their – no doubt – fine organisation.

What’s puzzling me is, well, what’s the point? Why exactly are they investing their money in this way? Are they hoping to attract more ‘customers’?

  • Agree completely. I actually took a picture of that billboard the other day. It is totally unjustifiable spending and I have been meaning to get around to writing about it…

  • It could be argued that, as a new company, they need to raise awareness of the brand locally. I, for one, wonder why an inordinate amount of money has been spent ditching a young company and starting another to maintain the local public housing stock. Why didn’t they go straight to City West? Or am I being naive?

  • Mainly because the Government insisted on another full stock-options process, Aled.
