I read this article about the refurbishment of properties in Caroline Street and Dixon Street in Irlam with interest. A few comments:
- I’m delighted that City West has made this investment in the empty properties on these two streets which is long overdue. I hope they provide good quality homes for local residents in Irlam and Cadishead who need them.
- Perhaps if City West cut out their spending on giant unnecessary billboard advertising, they might be able to do even more renovation work.
- Whilst the renovation of these empty properties will undoubtedly improve the local area significantly, I think it is slightly unfair to call these streets “ghost streets”. There are nearly 120 properties on the two roads of which 20 have been vacant. I’ve also found the local people who live in that area to be friendly and welcoming.
- One has to wonder why, if it is possibly to successfully renovate these terraces in Irlam, the Council has been so insistent on pulling similar properties down elsewhere in the City. Clearly some terraces are beyond repair, but there is no reason why many inner-city terraces could not be refurbished in the same way as these properties in Irlam, rather than pulled down and replaced with expensive houses and unwanted apartments.
