Patricroft Post Office – Consultation Sham

I am not surprised that a senior group of MPs has criticised the consultation process for the Government’s decision to close hundreds of Post Offices around the country, including the much-used Post Office on Lewis Street in Patricroft.

The cross-party Public Accounts Committee accused the Labour Government of showing “a real lack of concern” for residents affected by the proposals, and described the consultation as mere “window dressing” for a decision which had already been made.

Local residents in our area know that this is the modus operandi of the Labour Party – make the decision and then pretend to consult afterwards. We have seen it so many times from Salford’s ruling Labour Group on the Council, be it over Council Tax rises or the closure of schools.

None of this, of course, is any consolation to those local residents in Patricroft who have lost the use of a vital community resource. I am grateful to my Conservative colleagues locally who helped to run a petition against the closure, and to my Conservative colleagues at Westminster who tried to halt the closures. Sadly all three Salford Labour MPs voted to press ahead with the plans – I’m sure local residents will not forget that.
