Development Threat To More Walkden Green Field Sites

IMG_2203aI was really concerned to note that two Walkden South sites are including on a list of potential development sites circulated by Peel Holdings. These are:

  • the green space south of Kingsway and to the east of Greylag Crescent in Ellenbrook
  • the field north of the A580 and south of Mesne Lea Road and Chalfont Drive

No formal proposals have been submitted by Peel, who have worked closely with the Labour Council on the Salford City Stadium and other projects, but I’m keen to hear the views of local residents on this. Please e-mail me or leave a blog comment.

I’m particularly concerned about the effect of traffic on existing residential streets, and the loss of further green space. I will make sure that local residents are kept informed.

Developers have earmarked sites across the west of the City, including in Boothstown, Ellenbrook, Worsley, Swinton, Irlam and Cadishead. Your Conservative Councillors have organised a public meeting on the 4th February (7.30pm) at St Mark’s Church just down the road in Worsley, opposite the Novotel. I’ll make sure that more details are circulated when I have some more information. Hope to see you there.

  • Although I am a Labour voter, I acknowledge how hard local Conservative councillors fight off any plans by Peel to encroach on our precious green belt, I am thinking of Karen Garrido in particular. I am also angered by Eric Pickles overturning objections to the Burgess Farm developments but cannot trust SCC either. Please keep me informed of any public meetings, I will spread the word amongst my friends in the area. The plans to build 1,500 houses in Worsley alone, would have terrible knock-on effects for Walkden residents in terms of traffic. I hope many people will turn out to voice their opposition, regardless of political persuasion.
