Have Your Say On The M60 Widening Project

If you are a local resident in Roe Green, Worsley or Winton affected by the M60 widening proposals, and you would like to express your objections to the Highways Agency, you can contact the project lead officer Manuelle Salathe by e-mail on MPNGreaterManchester@highways.gsi.gov.uk, by calling 0161 930 5535 or by writing to Highways Agency, Major Projects, City Tower, Rm 710, Piccadilly plaza, Manchester, M1 4BE.

Worsley and Boothstown Transportation Task Group

I’ve been asked to draw readers attention to the website of the Worsley and Boothstown Transportation Task Group – WBTTG. I’m happy to do so – it’s a mine of information on transport not just in Worsley and Boothstown but for the surrounding areas as well.

Of particular current interest is their information on the M60 widening proposals – well worth a look.

Another Look At The M60 Widening

I’ve been down to Grange Road to have a look at the proposed motorway widening from another angle. From the Grange Road motorway bridge you get a great view of the accident blackspot between junctions 13 and 12 – something that as I’ve commented previously will only get worse with the addition of an extra lane.

Residents in Worsley, Winton, Roe Green, Peel Green and Brookhouse are rightly concerned about the noise and air pollution that is emitted from the motorway and I can assure them that I will continue to stand up for their views and oppose the Government’s proposals.

An Accident Waiting To Happen

Yesterday I attended a packed public meeting at Worsley Courthouse about the Government’s proposals – announced by Geoff Hoon – to introduce an extra lane onto the M60 between Junction 12 and 15.The residents who piled into the Courthouse are rightly angry about the proposals and the lack of consultation

Local communities in Roe Green, Worsley village, Winton, Peel Green and Brookhouse suffer from some of the worst air quality and noise pollution in the country due to their proximity to the M60, and little or no regard has been shown from the Government and the Highways Agency towards the ongoing health of local families.

The presentation from Highways Agency officials rightly pointed out that there is a problem with accidents between Junctions 12 and 13, but were utterly clueless over the fact that the new proposals would actually make the accident black-spot even worse.

One of the primary reasons that accidents occur between Junctions 12 and 13 is that traffic coming onto the M60 at Worsley has to cross two lanes of moving traffic to get into the lanes heading on to the Trafford Centre. Under the new proposal this would effectively add a third lane to cross. This is madness – a real accident waiting to happen. More accidents, more casualities, more congestion.

Public Meetings Coming Up

Two important public meetings are coming up over the next few weeks for local residents across Worsley and Eccles South.

The first is this coming Tuesday, April 7th. It is a public meeting about the proposed M60 Motorway widening scheme and will be held at Worsley Court House, starting at 7.30pm.

Residents in Worsley, Roe Green, Peel Green, Brookhouse and Winton are rightly concerned about the substantial air pollution that arises from the motorway passing near to residential areas as well as the ongoing congestion problems.

The second meeting is a special joint meeting of the Eccles and Irlam & Cadishead Community Committees, to discuss the planning proposals put forward by Peel Holdings for Port Salford. The meeting will be held at on Tuesday 14th April, starting at 7pm, at the Salford City Academy, Northfleet Rd, Brookhouse, Winton, Eccles.

Worsley and Boothstown Community Committee

This evening I went to observe the Worsley and Boothstown Community Committee, which was held in the hall at Bridgewater School.

A number of interesting points were raised, and I’m particularly concerned by the “suggestion” that green belt land on Vicars Hall Lane south of the Canal be used as a landfill site – an absurd suggestion on a number of levels. I’m going to have another look through the briefing paper provided and I will comment in more detail tomorrow.

On a related note, the Walkden and Little Hulton Community Committee is being held on Monday evening at the Walkden Gateway. The meeting starts at 6pm and all local residents are welcome.

East Lancashire Road (A580) Safety Improvements

There have been a number of items in the local press recently about the safety of pedestrians crossing the A580 East Lancashire Road, after the tragic death of yet another teenager.

I know that my Council colleagues in the Worsley and Boothstown & Ellenbrook wards, in conjunction with the Worsley and Boothstown Community Committee, have set aside a large amount of money from their devolved highways budget for safety improvements on the A580.

I hope that the Council sees fit to implement these changes – which I believe include an “all red” sequence at the lights at the Newearth Road/Ellenbrook Road junction with the A580 – as soon as possible. These proposals have been in place for a long time and Urban Vision and Salford City Council need to work faster to get these measures into place.
